Cotswold Archaeology is always on the lookout for promising, talented and experienced archaeologists to play critical roles in delivering our ever growing portfolio of projects. We are currently working on urban and rural projects in Bristol and across southern and central England, with all periods of British prehistory and history covered in our work.


With well over 100 archaeologists currently in the field, and plans to grow even further, we are looking for archaeologists with all levels of experience, from trainee graduates to those with several years of field experience.


Outreach activities are embedded in all the work we do. There may be opportunities for your time and efforts to be paid in supporting our existing community activities and we champion our colleagues to develop their own community-focused projects.

The Details


For all posts possession of a current and valid CSCS Card is essential. A trainee CSCS card can be acquired for those on a trainee contract. Membership of the CIfA at PCIfA level is desirable, as is a full driving licence.


Please note all pay scales quoted are annual equivalents based on a 37.5 hour week.






Trainee Archaeologists (£19,078)

Like many of those that join our award-winning trainee archaeologist programme you might be a recent graduate with a degree or masters in a relevant subject, or you may have graduated some time ago but never realised your ambitions to enter the profession.


Our trainee programme has been developed with the flexibility to respond to a wide variety of individual’s education and work experience. The training includes all the core skills required to be effective as an Archaeologist including; excavation, drawing, photography and sampling. In the past 3 years, over 40 trainees have successfully completed our programme. You will begin with a 6 month contact, which should be ample time to complete your training and on successful completion of your training log you will be offered promotion to Archaeologist.



Archaeologists (£19,733 – £20,642)

Ideally, candidates for the post of Archaeologist will be able to demonstrate their competence in core fieldwork skills through provision of a completed Archaeology Skills Passport ( or similar training log provided by another employer, and completed during previous experience working for commercial British archaeological practices.


Your core skills and experience should include manual excavation and recording of archaeological features, and the recovery of artefacts or samples. You should also be able to complete stratigraphic matrices, photograph archaeological features and sites, use tapes to record measurements accurately, compose accurate measured drawings and take levels.



Experienced Archaeologists (£21,164)

We are also looking for more experienced field archaeologists to assist our Supervisors with the training and mentoring of Trainee Archaeologists and with machine supervision. Candidates with demonstrable and considerable commercial archaeological fieldwork experience, who can provide documented evidence of their proficiency both in core fieldwork skills and machine supervision/watching brief, staff training/development and an aptitude for GPS survey will be eligible for the higher starting salary. In date training in the use of CAT and Genny equipment is also desirable.
