Early Saxon activity at East Challow, near Wantage, Oxfordshire
A talk by Matt Nichol
In 2017 a Cotswold Archaeology developer-funded excavation near the village of East Challow, west of Wantage, in Oxfordshire, revealed an extensive early 6-7th century AD Anglo-Saxon settlement, comprising of up to seventeen sunken-featured buildings, pits and two possible post-built halls. This settlement appeared to take advantage of its proximity to a nearby known Roman villa, likely to be the most probable source of Roman finds collected and used by the Anglo-Saxon population.
