Early Saxon activity at East Challow, near Wantage, Oxfordshire
A talk by Matt Nichol
In 2017 a Cotswold Archaeology developer-funded excavation near the village of East Challow, west of Wantage, in Oxfordshire, revealed prehistoric evidence to include Late Iron Age to mid Roman enclosures. The talk however will focus on the most significant of its discoveries, that of an extensive early 6-7th century AD Anglo-Saxon settlement, comprising of up to seventeen sunken-featured buildings, pits and two possible post-built halls. This settlement appeared to take advantage of its proximity to a nearby known Roman villa, likely to be the most probable source of Roman finds collected and used by the Anglo-Saxon population.
