Gloucester’s Eastern Roman Cemetery, Cotswold Archaeology

Archaeological investigations between 2013 and 2018 (Gloscat Media Studies and Block M) identified part of the Roman cemetery, which lay outside the Eastern Gate of the Roman town. Over 200 graves were identified despite later activity truncating archaeology on the site. Through examination of the skeletal remains, we can gain an insight into the people who were buried in the cemetery. Details about the demography, health and pathologies of some individuals are discussed.
This event is one of a series of Store-to-Stories talk, linked to the Store-to-Store volunteering project, aiming uncovering Gloucester’s Archaeological Treasures. Cotswold Archaeology, working with the Museum of Gloucester, are working with volunteers to help sort, re-box and consolidate the archaeological artefacts, documentary and photographic evidence held by the museum. The project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, will see the Museum’s stores sorted, reviewed and repacked to ensure their long-term preservation.
