A talk by Jo Caruth

In 2022, Cotswold Archaeology assisted with an archaeological community event, consisting of the excavation of seven test pits by local residents, school children, Great Yarmouth’s Young Archaeologists’ Club and other volunteers.  The excavations took place in the town as part of a larger event organised by Great Yarmouth Borough Council as part of their Historic England funded Uncovering Yarmouth project, which formed part of the High Street Heritage Action Zone Scheme awarded to town.

Our findings provided further information about Great Yarmouth’s history and the recovery of some interesting objects from preserved archaeological layers inside and outside the medieval town walls.  The earliest pottery dates to the 12th – 14th century as well as Post-medieval and modern material found in all test pits, generally reflecting the deposition of rubbish layers over time.  Jo will detail our findings and what they can tell us about the town’s history during the last 800 years or so.
