A Tale of the Unexpected: The discovery of a Roman villa in Bristol’s north
A talk by Tom Brindle and Marino Cardelli
Excavations carried out by Cotswold Archaeology between 2016 and 2018 at the former Dings Crusaders Rugby Football Club in Stoke Gifford, north of Bristol, revealed the remains of a Romano-British courtyard villa. The extent and preservation of the archaeological remains encountered provided a rare modern opportunity to investigate the ground plan of a Roman villa in its entirety. The results of the fieldwork and the subsequent analysis of the finds and environmental evidence recovered during the excavation have provided remarkable insights into the evolution of a Romano-British villa settlement over a period of four centuries.
