Barbed and tanged arrowhead
description
This arrowhead is made from a honey-coloured flint and belongs to the Sutton C type, a barbed and tanged form identified in Green’s classification and dates to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age.
Long and narrow in shape, the piece features a broadly square tang and carefully formed barbs. It has been fully bifacially retouched, with one face showing areas of distinctive ripple flaking, demonstrating a high level of knapping skill.
The very tip of the arrowhead, along with the end of one barb, has broken away, but the overall form remains clear.
Barbed and tanged arrowheads such as this are a characteristic tool of the period and would have been used for hunting as well as, potentially, warfare.
