Buckle
description
This buckle is likely of later 9th or 10th century date but came from a layer dated to 1120-1150 AD.
Made of copper alloy, this is a complete, cast single looped buckle of rectangular form. The frame is ornate and features moulded Borre style animal masks/heads at each corner. The sides of the frame between the heads are decorated with longitudinal grooves and transverse ridges. The pin is folded around the strap bar and rests in a triangular notch on the opposite side.
Similar buckles are known from Britain, however very few are from archaeological contexts. These rectangular buckles are a variant of the more commonly seen D-shaped examples which also depict similar zoomorphic features. Such rectangular buckles and their related forms are most common in eastern and southern England. Being more rare in the south-west, this example is an interesting outlier.
