Coin Weight
description
This coin weight has been identified as a Rose Ryal type of James I.
The obverse is stamped with the Roman numerals XXXIII with a crown above and a ‘S’ below. There is a crowned ‘C’ countermark in the top left corner. The reverse is stamped with a shield depicting the British coat of arms over a rose.
Weights of this type were used to ensure the quality of consistency of the denominations indicated. The gold Rose Ryal was revalued at 33 shillings between 1612-1619, although the countermark is a symbol of Charles I indicating that the weight was in circulation until at least the start of his reign.
