Composite double-sided bone comb
description
Undecorated, single-piece bone comb. Deliberately deposited in a female burial.
Double-sided with both fine and coarse teeth. Perforated at one end. Largely complete, with a few broken teeth. The small size is likely to be due to the restrictions of the size of the raw material and the fact that the teeth must be cut in alignment with the grain.
Bone combs are found as grave goods in a number of large late Roman cemeteries in Britain, most commonly in female graves.
