Die

  • Photograph
Die with scale

description

This die is marked with double ring-and-dot incised motifs, all neatly and symmetrically placed on each face.

Each opposite face adds up to 7, which is the ‘regular’ layout used up to the present day. Remains of black colour can still be seen in the circles marking the numbers.

The die is miniature, measuring only 6mm x 6mm. Tiny dice are known from Roman to post-medieval contexts, with the majority appearing at the end of that date range, in line with the increase in dice-related games and gambling. This example was recovered from a quarry pit which also contained medieval pottery, suggesting a similar date.
