Disc Brooch
description
Brooches from the Early Medieval period are extremely diverse.
Using Dr Rosie Weetch’s typology, this example is classified as a Type 15B- ‘disc with openwork cross’. Over 50 examples of this type have been recorded, the majority being found in northwest Norfolk. Only a handful have been found outside East Anglia, suggesting they were likely produced in local workshops. It is possibly of 8th-11th century date.
The brooch is circular in plan and has four triangular cut-outs which effectively create a central cross-shaped or ‘cruciform’ design. A small dimple at the midpoint of the cross and a barely visible engraved outer circle, creating a border, are probably compass drawn. The back of the brooch still retains its original fittings, consisting of a rectangular loop and a simple, folder catchplate.
