Mount
description
This incomplete object is almost certainly a dress accessory of Roman date.
It has been decorated with enamelling, comprising a green seven-pointed star set against a blue background, around which seven circular roundels are spaced, comprising an outer ring of white and an inner dark brown/black dot.
Comparable decoration can be found on plate brooches of Continental type whose forms usually date to the 2nd or 3rd century AD.
The appearance of its perforated terminal additionally evokes those of zoomorphic form found found upon rare forms of Continental plate brooch.
Although this find shares some morphological features with seal box lids, it lacks the usual rim present on these objects.
Its central aperture suggests that it functioned as some kind of decorative mount or strap fitting with a separate attachment stud or rivet.
