Rotary Quern
description
This is the upper stone from a rotary quern with a sloped concave grinding surface and a wide cylindrical eye with a shallow basin-shaped hopper.
Projecting from one side of the circumference is a lug for a vertical handle socket. The inside of this socket is worn very smooth suggesting that the handle was loose within the socket.
This quern is of interest because it is the first Roman quern with a protrusion (or lug) for a vertical handle to be found in southern England.
