Sub-Biconical Jar
description
This small, decorated sub-biconical jar was recovered from the grave of a child aged around eight years old, whose sex could not be determined.
Made from a granitic fabric, the jar has a flaring rim and a flat-rounded base which features a hole that may have been deliberately made. The jar is decorated with bands of incised horizontal lines, along with Type A 1bi ring stamps. Additional ring-stamped motifs form pendent triangles beneath the vessel’s carination.
The child was buried with a number of other grave goods, including two annular brooches, a worked bone pin, glass beads, and a knife.
The burial ground from which this vessel was recovered contained 271 graves. Chronological analysis indicates that it was in use from the latter half of the 5th century until around, or shortly after, the middle of the 7th century.
