Cotswold Archaeology is underway with an exciting project to explore basement areas in the southern part of the Roman Baths museum that are currently not on view to the public. The investigations will examine parts of the Roman Baths Museum that runs under York Street and Swallow Street, where plans are being developed to create a learning resource and interpretation centre (The Archway Centre) for the World Heritage Site of Bath. It is also intended to provide increased access to those parts of the Roman Baths that have previously been exposed in these areas through excavations in the 19th and 20th-centuries, but have either been filled in or are not currently open to the public.
Our archaeologists will be re-opening trenches across two small baths previously excavated by Professor Barry Cunliffe in the 1960s, and undertaking a handful of other test trenches in areas not previously examined. The works will continue until the end of April.
