Archaeologists at Moat Lane, Towcester have uncovered the remains of a Roman building. The substantial stone footings indicate that this may have been a 2-storey dwelling. The surface of a Roman street has been revealed alongside that would have linked the building to Watling Street, the important Roman road which still runs through the centre of the present town.
A viewing point has been installed by this very exciting discovery and visitors are invited to come and see the building, and speak to the archaeologists as they make further discoveries. The site is open Monday-Friday from 8am – 3pm. Access is via Whitton’s Lane and free to all.

So far the excavations, undertaken on behalf of Morgan Sindall Ltd and South Northamptonshire Council in advance of redevelopment, have uncovered the remains of a vast Roman defensive ditch, evidence for the agricultural use of this area during the Roman period and, of course, the exciting remains of a Roman Building.
