CA is saddened to learn of the death of Sheppard Frere aged 98. Sheppard was Professor of the Archaeology of the Roman Empire at Oxford University and a long-serving Chairman of the Cirencester Excavation Committee, the forerunner of CA. Neil Holbrook, Chief Executive of CA said “Sheppard was a true colossus of 20th century archaeology. He was one of the greats who understood just how important it was to excavate archaeological sites prior to development. He was a tremendous help to me when I published many of the excavations undertaken in Cirencester in the 1960s and 1970s in Cirencester Excavations Vol 5 (1998). His values are ones which apply just as much now as when he was working: a commitment to the highest level of field craft and the absolute importance of an appropriate level of dissemination of the results”.

Sheppard and his wife Janet were our guests of honour when we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the formation of CEC in 2008 (see Highlight 1 of our 25 Highlights). CA sends its condolences to Janet and the rest of Sheppard’s family.
